UC falls to Pitt 74-71

UC, 10-4 overall (2-1 Big East) fell to Pitt at Fifth Third Arena tonight.

Ashton Gibbs paced Pitt with 19 points and Gilbert Brown added 17 points off the bench. Deonta Vauhgn had 17 points for Cincinnati.

Cincinnati was hoping to start off Big East play 3-0 for the first time in team history.

Cincinnati doesn't have much time to dwell on the defeat. The Bearcats host Cal State Bakersfield Wednesday night before returning to Big East play against Seton Hall on Saturday.

My two cents: 1/4/10

Well, what can I say? It's been for the most part a disappointing week.

Watching the Bearcats and Bengals getting beat down in pretty similar fashion wasn't exactly the way I wanted to start the new year. The excuse makers are busy pointing out that the Bengals were playing without Crocker, Peko, Sims for most of the game, Maulaluga, and Geathers. Okay, point taken. Maybe I'll cut them a LITTLE slack on defense, but the offense was still playing with 10 out of 11 starters, and they managed just 72 yards of offense. 72??? Are you kidding me? Somebody please explain to me how ANYBODY can feel any drop of confidence in this team going into Saturday's game with this kind of offense.

I'm tired of hearing the excuses about how this is a running team now, and they've changed their focus into being a team of defense and ball control. BULL.

This team is paying right now for bad decisions they have made in the past, pure and simple. Their offensive line was a strength of this team in 05, it is now a liability. In 05, they had a younger Chad Johnson, TJ, Kevin Walter, and Kelley Washington. They now have Chad Johnson and who?

The New York Jets manhandled the Bengals all night last night on both sides of the ball, and not by accident. The Jets one year took Ferguson and Mangold in the first round. Both of them are stellar offensive lineman now. They also signed perennial Pro Bowler Feneca from the Steelers. The Bengals start 3 UFA's.

Based on what i saw last night, I don't see any way the Bengals win the rematch on Saturday. Injuries and a lack of talent and imagination are throwing another season away.

Cincinnati, which improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference with a gritty 65-58 win Saturday at Rutgers, faces a Pittsburgh Panthers team that is coming off a momentous 82-72 upset win Saturday afternoon at No. 5 Syracuse.

Cincinnati is a mentally, physically and emotionally drained team.

Looking for some playoff experience to help a depleted defense heading into Saturday’s Wild Card Game at Paul Brown Stadium, the Bengals didn’t have to look very far Monday in signing 2004 draft pick Keiwan Ratliff.
